Love Our World Day!

During our literacy study this week, we will keep reading many different fairy tales, and we will be completing projects that explore different aspects of fairytale stories. This week we will be reading The Three Little Pigs, Hansel and Gretel, and The Brementown Musicians. We will be making a wanted poster for the Big Bad Wolf, and we’ll be sequencing the events in Hansel and Gretel.  We will also keep using our checklist to check of the “ingredients” in each fairy tale.  In Science, we will continue learning about the tools for measuring weather, and we will continue to collect data about our daily weather. In Math, we are going to continue to work with subtraction of large numbers. Please make extra time to help with homework this week if you can.

This week we will also begin a series of lessons about community and economy that will be taught by a volunteer who is also a chemist at Lord Corporation. We are very excited about working with Mr. Joey!

Love Our World Day is on Tuesday! Second Grade students will be rotating to learn to love the arts and culture in three countries: Russia, Germany, and Egypt. In addition to the special activities for Second Graders, our whole school will be making care-kits for the Red Cross to distribute to children who are victims of natural disasters. We will be making 800 care kits! We will also be having a school-wide sing-along of “We are the World.”

In addition to Love Our World Day, Tuesday is also Valentine’s Day. We will not be having a Valentine’s day celebration, but there will be time for students to distribute valentine cards. If you wish to make valentines, a name with all of the students in the class was sent home on Friday.

Weather Watchers

During our literacy study this week, we will continue comparing different versions of the Cinderella story, and we will be discussing how the culture of a particular country affects the elements of the story. In Science, we will continue learning about the tools for measuring weather, and we will continue to collect data about our daily weather. The tools that we will focus on using this week are a rain guage and an anemometer, which measures wind speed.  In Math, we will continue with our study of fractions. We will be playing some games with fractions and creating group projects with fractions. Keep practicing with fractions at home, if you can.

Villa 8 Welcomes a New Member!

We are so excited to announce the arrival of our class pet, Mr. Cobra Tucker Hamsterton. He is a long -haired hamster and he is quite cute and friendly. We will be making scientific observations of him and we will be taking turns caring for him. If you would like to donate food or other supplies for our new pet, please email Ms. Thompson to find out what is needed.

During our literacy study this week, we will begin a study of fairy tales. We will be thinking about what elements they have in common around the world. Students will also be completing end-of-quarter literacy assessments and celebrating progress. As we wrap up our unit of inquiry about how climate and geographic features affect how people live, we will be creating travel brochures for the countries we studied.  In Math, we’ll be reviewing what we have learned the quarter and we will complete the Quarter 2 math Assessment.
