Our field day is this Friday. Please remember to make sure your child is dressed in comfortable clothes and good shoes. All students should bring a filled water bottle, as we will be outdoors and active for over an hour. You may also want to apply sunscreen to your child in the morning, and s/he may want to wear a hat for sun protection. The theme for field day this year is the Olympics, and we will be kicking it off on Thursday with a parade of nations. Villa 8 wil be representing Russia, so we will all need to wear red on Friday, as Red is the national color of Russia.
During our literacy study this week, we will be participating in book clubs, and discussing what it means to be a good book-club member who is engaged with the literature. In Math, we will be reviewing all of our second-grade Math skills and we will be preparing for the end-of-year math assessment. We will continue observing the metamorphosis of our caterpillars into butterflies; they will likely emerge from their chrysallises soon! We will also be researching and comparing the life cycles of Amphibians and Insects.

Our final field trip is on Tuesday. We will be going to Laurel Hills Park, where we will engage in hands-on learning about insects and other wildlife. Please remember to make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, as we will be outside the whole time. It is also a good idea to apply sunscreen in the morning, as teachers are not allowed to apply it at school. Students do not need to bring water bottles or snack, as this will be provided (thanks to fabulous volunteers!).
During our literacy study this week, we will continue studying nonfiction texts, and we will be using them to do research. In Math, we will be learning about probability and symmetry. During our science unit this week, we will continue observing our caterpillars, many of which are now in chrysalis form, and we will be researching and comparing the life cycles of Reptiles and Fish. We will also be doing some activities that we can share with rising second-graders to prepare them for second grade.
The third-fifth graders will be taking the EOG tests this week. While we won’t be taking the tests, our schedule will be affected. We will be eating lunch in our room due to testing Wednesday-Friday. We will also eat lunch in our room on Tuesday, due to our field trip. Our specials will be canceled on Wednesday and Friday. Please talk with your child to prepare him or her for the changes to our schedule. It’s important that we all approach change with cheerful flexibility!

During our literacy study this week, students will be working on identifying the elements of particular genres of literature, with a specific focus on understanding and using text features. During our Social Studies unit, our historical figures research will continue. In Math, we are going to be exploring place value and representation of large numbers, even into the 1000s!
In addition to our usual learning this week, we will also be taking part in a standardized assesment that will evaluate our proficiency in reading and math. This assessment is something that all Wake County second graders will participate in, and it consists of three multiple-choice tests. The assessment will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and we will begin testing at the beginning of the school day, so please make sure your child arrives on time. To help your child come prepared for the test, please make sure that he or she has a good breakfast and gets a good night’s sleep.
