The Gift of Reading continues this week at Farmington Woods, and I hope each family will continue to participate at home by reading extensively. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, December 21 at 10:00. From 10:00-10:30, Villa 8 will be welcoming registered volunteers to come and read with us in our cozy cabin. You could come and read aloud to the class or to a small group, or you could just curl up with a good friend and a good book. If you are interested in joining our class during that time, please email me so I can facilitate that.
Most of our literacy work this week will involve lots of reading! We will also be finishing up a wintry writing project. In Math, we’ll keep practicing telling time. During our inquiry unit, we’ll be presenting our fantasy world projects that include geographic features. If we have time, we’ll also begin learning about the different climate zones on our planet.
As the year comes to a close, I am so glad to know each and every one of my students, and I am looking to a wonderful start to 2012 with them! I hope everyone has wonderful winter vacation filled with fun times and cozy cuddles. Keep reading! Check the Monday folder for some ideas to keep learning skills sharp during the break!

Reading: The gift of reading begins this week. We will be reading more and more each day at school, and you should be reading a lot at home, too! We will not have Math homework this week so that we can devote more of our time to reading. Read, read, read, and then read some more!

During our Reading this week, we will continue learning about nonfiction. We’ll be working on using all that we have learned so far to retell nonfiction books. In Writing, we’ll keep writing, revising, and editing our picture books. Soon we will need typists for our books; if you are interested in typing some of our stories for final publication before they are bound into books, please email me. In Math, we’ll continue exploring strategies for adding larger numbers, and we’ll begin a unit on telling time. During our inquiry unit, we’ll be demonstrating our knowledge of geographic features be creating our own fantasy worlds that include geographic features.
If you want to know more about what we’re doing each day, follow us on twitter! We will be posting daily (hopefully!) about something neat that we are doing in Villa 8. I hope you enjoy getting our tweets!
